In June of 2021, the 100 Black Men of Greater Mobile partnered with Hancock Whitney Bank to fund a scholarship for second year students. These students show great academic promise but are often faced with problematic circumstances that prevent them from completing their academic journey. This scholarship which is also funded and facilitated by the Bishop State Community College Foundation has an initial guarantee of funding and commitment of $25,000 from the 100, Hancock Whitney, and the college’s foundation.
For many talented and gifted young people who dream of going to college, the financial resources may not be available to help them make that dream a reality. Scholarships provide the essential opportunity that gives promising students the chance to pursue their educational goals in the face of a world-class education’s rising cost. Imagine getting to college, performing well and then not having the finances to finish your degree. So many young people today find themselves in this exact situation.
The scholarship which is to be awarded to students who attend BSCC who are in their final year of study, was recently awarded to two deserving students. Recent awardees major in education and computer science both with GPA above 3.0. To obtain the scholarship, the students must have financial need with a minimum 2.75 GPA. Students in any area of study can apply, however, our primary focus will be those students who are from low to moderate socioeconomic backgrounds and those who have some form of business as an area of concentration.
The 100 is hoping that upon graduation these students would be provided opportunities to work at the partner banking institutions in and near Mobile as entry level employees.
The 100 is a small non-profit organization focused on uplifting the lives of all, but we particularly concentrate our efforts in serving those in underserved communities.
